In July of 2021, we stood in a small shop in Edinburg holding a ribbon, surrounded by family, friends, and a few officials from the City who had come out to wish us well. We had violins on the wall, a workbench in the back, and absolutely no idea whether anyone would walk through the door.
Five years later, the answer to that question is the reason this post exists.
The Shop We Set Out to Build
The idea behind Bosky Strings was never complicated. The Rio Grande Valley is full of string players. There are orchestra programs in nearly every district, mariachi groups in the schools and on stages across the region, and working musicians who play week in and week out. What the Valley did not have was a place those musicians could count on without driving to San Antonio or Houston.
We wanted to be that place. Somewhere a parent could bring a rental and get an honest answer about whether it was worth repairing. Somewhere a student could be sized properly instead of handed whatever was left in the box. Somewhere a mariachi player could bring a vihuela or a guitarrón and not be told we only work on orchestral instruments.
That was the whole plan. Be useful, be honest, and be here.
What Five Years Built
The shop today looks very different from the one behind that ribbon. In the fall of 2024 we moved into our current space at 3906 S. Jackson Road, and the difference was immediate. The retail floor gave us room to actually display instruments, bows, cases, and accessories instead of fitting them wherever they would go. The repair bench got dedicated space and proper lighting, which meant we could take on restoration work we would have had to turn away before. We added a real area for evaluations, so when someone brings in an instrument they are unsure about, we can sit down and talk it through without anyone feeling rushed.
We also grew into a full range of services along the way. Sales and rentals for families just getting started. Repairs and restoration for instruments that have seen better decades. Professional setups for players who have outgrown what they are on. And with Bosky School of Music under the same roof, lessons for students who want to keep going.
Summer turned into our busiest and favorite season. Every year around this time, instruments start coming in from schools across the Valley, and the bench fills up with violins and violas and cellos that need seams closed, bridges straightened, and strings replaced before the new school year begins. There is something satisfying about sending a whole section back out ready to play.
The Part We Did Not Expect
What we were not prepared for was how much of this job is watching people grow up.
Students who came in for their first quarter-size violin are now leading sections. Families who rented one instrument have come back for a second and a third as younger siblings started their own programs. Directors who took a chance on a brand-new shop in 2021 are still sending us their students.
We have repaired instruments that were passed down through families and instruments that were bought on a tight budget with a lot of hope attached. Both matter. An instrument is a strange thing to be trusted with, because it is never really about the wood and the varnish. It is about what somebody is trying to do with it.
Those are the milestones we actually keep track of.

None of this was inevitable. A shop like ours only exists because a community decides it should. You decided that, over and over, for five years.
